In 1609 Galileo made his first major telescopic discoveries. To honor the 400th anniversary of his legendary observations, 2009 has been designated the International Year of Astronomy by the International Astronomical Union and UNESCO. Our Todd Library display features many beautiful astronomy titles. Check one out and brush up on your star gazing!
January 19 was the 200th anniversary of the birth of Edgar Allan Poe, one of the best known American authors. In honor of this event we’ve put together a display including books, poems, facsimiles of his writing–even a copy of the Poe postage stamp issued this year. Stop by and discover something new or reread an old favorite. Then you can decide if, like Poe said, “Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of their reality.”
January is the month that we celebrate the birthday of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. A Presidential Proclamation has been issued every year since 1986 designating the third Monday in January as being a Federal Holiday in memory of him. Come celebrate with us and check out a good book or video concerning his life and times.
