June signifies the anniversary of when AIDS was first noted. On June 5, 1981, the Centers for Disease Control first described the new illness in a newsletter. About a year later, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome was adopted as the offical name for the new disease by the CDC. The actual virus that causes AIDS was identified in 1983 and named in 1985 as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The first person to die from this disease in the developed world was in 1959. More than 524,000 Americans have died of AIDS while more than 22 million people worldwide. At the present time, about 40 million people worldwide are living with HIV/AIDS.
