Have you ever wondered about the history of Cinco de Mayo, or “5th of May” celebrations? Well, 157 years ago, in 1862, a small band of 4.000 Mexican soldiers held off an attack by the invading French army in Puebla, Mexico.
Following the victory, then-President of Mexico, Benito Juarez, declared the date, May 5, to be a day of celebration, which has been honored in the state of Puebla, Mexico, as well as by Mexican Americans in the U.S. ever since.

This Friday, May 3, join the WCC Art and Music Departments as they participate in Aurora’s First Fridays! Listen to live music by the Jazz Combo, Big Band, Steel Pan, and Chorale from 5-8:30 p.m. on the riverfront patio of the Aurora Downtown Campus at 18 S. River Street.
Bring your friends and family to browse the Ceramics Club’s 21st Annual Spring Pottery Sale, and enjoy activities like pottery demonstrations, silk screening by William Estrada, Horizons student literary publication, face painting, free food, a selfie photo table, a caricature drawing table, and a photo demonstration.
If there is inclement weather, we will be dispersed throughout the first floor of the Downtown Aurora Campus, 18 S. River Street.
