Banned Books Week

Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read, September 23-30,2006 Observed since 1982, this annual event reminds Americans not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted. After all, intellectual freedom can exist only where essential conditions are met: the freedom to choose, the freedom to express one’s opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular, and the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them.

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of Banned Books Week, we celebrate our intellectual freedom with our display of famous quotes, our enhanced Web site featuring a selection of “locally famous” talent reading banned books, and a cautionary message to those who choose to enter a place of censored materials!

The library website now also sports the “I Love Banned Books” banner created by jovial_cynic at newprotest.org.
