Celebrating National Library Week! April 7-13, 2019

April is also National Poetry Month – please join us at Todd Library in Sugar Grove on Thursday, April 18 from 7-8:30 p.m. for Poetry Out Loud!  Read a poem of your own or that of a favorite poet.  Light refreshments will be provided.  All are welcome!

Until then, here are the first seven lines of T.S. Eliot’s 1922 modernist poem, “The Waste Land,” perhaps the most famous mention of April in poetry:

April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in forgetful snow, feeding

A little life with dried tubers.

Here are some literary interpretations of the poem from Quora.com, and the entire poem, from PoetryFoundation.org.

Happy Spring!

Welcome Back! First Friday Event 6:30-8:00 p.m. April 5, 2019 at Aurora Downtown Campus Library

As one of Downtown Aurora’s monthly First Friday events, the Waubonsee Community College MEChA student group will present “Man Up: Cry More,” an honest conversation and open dialogue around toxic masculinity, including how to identify it and address it, and provide a space for individuals to share their experiences as womxn/men.

We will begin with an “ice breaker” by doing a privilege walk, and then start the conversation. Light refreshments will be provided.

Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztlán (MEChA) is a student organization that promotes higher education, community engagement, political participation, culture, and history.
