November is Native American Heritage Month!

Monday, Nov. 18 – Talk by Dr. Jayne-Leigh Thomas, Indiana U
11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. in BDE150
Highlights her work as NAGPRA Director at Indiana University, and also discusses IU’s Native American and Indigenous Studies programs for prospective transfer students.

Monday, Nov. 18 – Anthropology Talk by Dr. Jayne-Leigh Thomas
2:00 – 3:30 p.m. in BDE 150
Focuses on the work of an anthropologist, and the science and art of investigating culture through artifacts – includes Q&A segment.

Tuesday, Nov. 19 – “Two Spirits” Film Screening and Discussion
2:00 – 4:00 p.m. in APC 120
View and discuss director Lydia Nibley’s documentary about the murder of a “two-spirit” Navajo youth, Fred Martinez, in the context of Navajo beliefs about masculine/feminine spiritual balance.

Wednesday, Nov. 20 – Bear Clan Dancers and Singers Event
2:00 – 4:00 p.m. in AUD 200
Enjoy the Wisconsin Dells area troupe’s high-energy, exciting program combining live singing and drumming with traditional dances, social dances, and articulate verbal interpretation.

WCC Veterans’ Day Ceremony – Monday, November 11 at 11:00 a.m. in APC110

Follow the flags lining the walkway from the Student Center (STC) to the Academic and Professional Center (APC)  for Monday’s 11:00 a.m. Veterans’ Day Ceremony honoring our military veterans, featuring:

  • Former Waubonsee student and Iraq War veteran Tori Porter, sharing her military experiences and current work with veterans.
  • Patriotic music from Waubonsee music students and faculty.
  • Special presentation of the MIA/POW Remembrance Ceremony.
  • Participation of the West Aurora High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps.

The ceremony will conclude by 12:00 p.m.  Stop by Todd Library on the 2nd floor of Collins Hall to view our related book display and add a veteran’s name to our Honor Wall.
