In fourteen hundred ninety-two<\/span>
Columbus sailed the ocean blue.<\/span>
He had three ships and left from Spain;<\/span>
He sailed through sunshine, wind and rain.<\/span>
He sailed by night; he sailed by day;<\/span>
He used the stars to find his way.<\/span>
A compass also helped him know<\/span>
How to find the way to go.<\/span>
Ninety sailors were on board;<\/span>
Some men worked while others snored.<\/span>
Then the workers went to sleep;<\/span>
And others watched the ocean deep.<\/span>
Day after day they looked for land;<\/span>
They dreamed of trees and rocks and sand.<\/span>
October 12 their dream came true,<\/span>
You never saw a happier crew!<\/span>
“Indians!\u00a0 Indians!”\u00a0 Columbus cried;<\/span>
His heart was filled with joyful pride.<\/span>
But “India” the land was not;<\/span>
It was the Bahamas, and it was hot.<\/span>
The Arakawa natives were very nice;<\/span>
They gave the sailors food and spice.<\/span>
Columbus sailed on to find some gold<\/span>
To bring back home, as he’d been told.<\/span>
He made the trip again and again,<\/span>
Trading gold to bring to Spain.<\/span>
The first American?\u00a0 No, not quite.<\/span>
But Columbus was brave, and he was bright.<\/span><\/p>\n
