Reading Powers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s third column at her new home, a\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bnreview.barnesandnoble.com\/t5\/A-Reading-Life\/In-the-Garden-of-Beasts\/ba-p\/4875\">review<\/a> of\u00c2\u00a0<strong>Erik Larson<\/strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcs\u00c2\u00a0<em>In The Garden of the Beasts,<\/em> it struck me how this move\u00e2\u20ac\u201dostensibly from a 100+ year-old, 21-Pulitzer newspaper to a glorified book chain blog\u00e2\u20ac\u201dwas clearly a step <em>up<\/em> rather than <em>down<\/em>. For example, consider design. Powers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/ae\/books\/articles\/2010\/04\/18\/a_reading_life\/\">last column<\/a> at <em>The Boston Globe <\/em>was a pitiful sliver of text surrounded by garish ads.
