One kind of functional shift is the &#8220;verbing&#8221; of a noun &#8212; for  example, &#8220;parenting our children.&#8221; Shakespeare frequently verbed nouns  to great effect and Davis wanted to find out if the literary device  could be understood with neuroscience.
