Some of the first modern essays\u00e2\u20ac\u201dby <a href=\"http:\/\/www.luminarium.org\/renascence-editions\/montaigne\/2x.htm\">Michel de Montaigne<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.westegg.com\/bacon\/studies.html\">Sir Francis Bacon<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u201dare on that very subject. Among more recent publications, you might enjoy Anne Fadiman\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s collection <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/1-9780374527228-3\">Ex Libris<\/a><\/em> or Larry McMurtry\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/1-9780684870199-2\">Walter Benjamin at the Dairy Queen<\/a><\/em>.  The trouble with people writing about their libraries is, well, every  writer has one. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s like writing about your left hand. Or your M.F.A.  program. But McMurtry is a special case. If he had never written <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/1-9781439195260-0\">Lonesome Dove<\/a><\/em> or <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/1-9780684853864-5\">The Last Picture Show<\/a><\/em>,  he would be famous\u00e2\u20ac\u201dat least among collectors\u00e2\u20ac\u201das one of the country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s  most respected dealers in used and rare books.
