The Office of Disability Employment Policy&#8217;s goal is to increase the \t\tpublic&#8217;s awareness of the contributions and skills of American workers with \t\tdisabilities.  Efforts to educate the American public on issues related to \t\tdisability and employment actually began in 1945 with Congress passing a law \t\tdeclaring the first week in October each year as &#8220;National Employ the Physically \t\tHandicapped Week.&#8221; In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the \t\tname to &#8220;National Disability Employment Awareness Month.&#8221;  Although physical disabilities are often recognized, invisible  disabilities are sometimes difficult to recognize or understand.
