October’s Baseball Firsts!

Even though we are now getting into Football season, there are a few great Baseball moments in History as well that occurred in the Month of October. Come check them out at the Todd Library’s monthly display. Babe Ruth Calls his Shot, World Series 1932, Maris breaks Ruth’s Home Run Record 1961, Robinson named Baseball’s 1st Black Major League Manager 1974,and Bonds breaks season Home Run record 2001.

September 1939 – Beginning of World War II

After securing a non-agression pact with the USSR (that secretly allowed for the partition of Poland by the Soviet Union and Germany), Germany invaded Poland without a “Declaration of War” at 4:45 am. on September 1st. Poland fell before the end of the Month. Come learn more about World War II history during Todd Library’s  September display. Check out a book or two or even a Video.

Anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal

August 15, 1914

After 10 years of construction and much multi-nation diplomacy, the Panama Canal opened for operation which connected the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. Come join us at the Todd Library and check out books  concerning the history of this famous endeavor of man against nature.

Anniversary of First Photographs used in a Newspaper Report

July 1, 1848

The first instance of photojournalism occurred during the Paris Riots of 1848 from a rooftop location. Wood engravings of the two daguerreotypes were made and the images appeared in the weekly newspaper L’Illustration Journal Universel.
