Choice Review
This new bilingual dictionary follows the Larousse tradition of quality language dictionaries designed to meet the needs of both the scholar and the occasional student. The dictionary is comprehensive in scope and includes "over 300,000 references and 500,000 translations." It includes proper nouns, geographical references, popular slang, and many new French words that are culturally Swiss, Belgian, and French-Canadian. Each entry includes the phonetic spelling of the word, the part of speech, and its usage. A unique feature of the dictionary is the inclusion of occasional "culture bound" comments that place words in a specific cultural context--e.g., "English breakfast," "viennoiserie," "bonnet phrygien." The dictionary contains a standard abbreviations guide, a phonetic transcription of French and English words, a list of 116 common French verbs and their conjugations, and a list of common English irregular verbs. It also includes eight pages of color maps highlighting the French language, culture, and heritage. Recommended for all academic libraries. J. C. Jurgens; St. Cloud State University
