Booklist Review
Guns are woven into the cultural fabric of American history and contemporary life, from mythical Wild West shootouts to machine-gun gangsters. Accompanied by substantial and carefully considered explanation, analysis, and commentary, this volume of Grey House's Opinions Throughout History compiles mass media news items, statistical reports, think tank white papers, speeches, scholarly articles, court cases, and legislation. Chapters cover every conceivable gun topic including gun control in colonial America, the second amendment, armed rebellion, the NRA, deer hunting with an AR-15, urban crime, child welfare, the far right, hate crimes, and civilian weaponry. Although not heavily illustrated, well-placed, high impact photos, such as the Ruby Ridge compound in flames and a Prohibition-era poster admonishing us that "Beer is a Bluffer" are powerful. This exceptionally well-crafted reference book has a place on all public, high school, and undergraduate library shelves, and reference selectors will want to watch for future entries in the series, which will cover privacy rights, immigration, gender roles, drug use, the death penalty, globalization and similar topics.
Choice Review
This volume is one in a series of reference books from Grey House detailing opinions on a given topic throughout history. This text covers the history of guns from the discovery of gunpowder by the early Chinese, to the gun manufacturers in the era of westward expansion, through the prevalence of guns in gangsta rap music culture, and up to the present lack of gun control legislation under the current administration. The reference begins with a historical timeline, followed by 29 chapters, each of which opens with an introduction and a list of topics and source documents to be covered. Each chapter concludes with discussion questions and a works used section. The topic of guns and control is a difficult one; while history shows that early gun use was mainly for protection, today the US has seen an increase in school and public shootings. This valuable tool is best suited for high school students and early undergraduates to help them understand the ongoing debates surrounding this topic, including the history of guns and gun use in the US, from early history to the present. Summing Up: Recommended. General readers and lower-division undergraduates. --Christina Irene Tooulias-Santolin, University of Toronto Libraries
