"From 2000 to 2010, the U.S. Latino population increased by 44 percent. It grew even more--by more than 73 percent--in eight out of twelve midwestern states over the same years. This interdisciplinary anthology of essays examines the history, education, literature, art, and politics of Latinos in the Midwest in view of the demographic changes experienced by states in this region with growing Latino populations and the recent immigration raids in the Midwest. From 2000 to 2010, the Latino population increased by more than 73 percent across eight midwestern states. These interdisciplinary essays explore issues of history, education, literature, art, and politics defining today's Latina/o Midwest. Some contributors delve into the Latina/o revitalization of rural areas, where communities have launched bold experiments in dual-language immersion education while seeing integrated neighborhoods, churches, and sports teams become the norm. Others reveal metro areas as laboratories for emerging Latino subjectivities, places where for some, the term Latina/o itself corresponds to a new type of lived identity as different Latina/o groups interact in shared neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces.

The contributions to this reader challenge the narrative that Latino/as are newcomers to the Midwest. The 17 chapters are divided into five parts exploring migration, labor, language, social movements, and communities in the Midwest. The authors guide readers through the "browning" of the Midwest by focusing on the rural and urban experiences of Latinidades, and by highlighting Latina/o histories and their impact on the social, cultural, and economic dimensions of midwestern communities. The contributors navigate the Latina/o experiences by examining migration, politics, language, the working class, and religious traditions. As the editors point out, all of the chapters play an important role in redefining the narratives of Latina/o Midwesterners through the lens of transnational, transregional, intraregional, and virtual Latinidades. This key book expands understanding of Latina/os outside of the traditional areas of the US (e.g., the Southwest). A major addition to the histories of Latina/os and future Latina/o studies scholarship on the Midwest. Summing Up: Recommended.
