Booklist Review

Newton's overviews of historical, biological, developmental, legal, medical, and societal issues illustrate the complexity of today's vexed public debates about the very personal matters of sex and gender. Clarifying the distinctions between the two, he summarizes historical roots and the state of contemporary knowledge of this broad topic, giving relatively extended discussion to gender development, transgenderism, gender roles, and affectional orientation. Bibliographies, first-person narratives, selected documents on legal matters, and profiles of significant individuals and organizations complement brief summaries of such topics as body image, LGBT discrimination, sex education, and gender inequality. Discussions of gender dysphoria and transgenderism implicitly conflate them with transsexualism, ignoring perhaps in deference to DSM definitions those who consider themselves transgendered but definitely not transsexual (e.g., male-to-female crossdressers). Aside from that, Newton offers a good introduction to issues much discussed in the public arena but not always well understood by discussants.--Rettig, James Copyright 2017 Booklist

Choice Review

Like other books in the publisher's "Contemporary World Issues" series, this handbook seems written with good intentions but is flawed in execution. Factual information is presented in a nonjudgmental way, and access is provided through a table of contents and an index. The book also includes a data and documents section, an annotated bibliography, a chronology, and a glossary. Much of the book focuses on transgenderism and other forms of gender expression, but topics such as feminism, gender equality, and even eating disorders are included. Thus, the scope seems overly broad or vague. Personal essays and profiles of individuals and organizations are included but with insufficient context as to why they were selected. Positive perspectives are overemphasized in these sections, doing researchers a disservice. This would be a stronger resource if author Newton, a science educator and an author of other books in this series, had focused only on gender expression and given the subject fuller consideration. As it is, presenting multiple gender-related topics in such a broadly titled book implies that a laundry list of gender "issues" may be adequately addressed in brief discussion. Summing Up: Optional.
