This update to the third edition (CH, Jul'09, 46-6246) emphasizes a user-centric approach, clearly evidenced by the work's new subtitle. Centering less on coding examples than in previous editions, the fourth edition recommends establishing a strategic plan based on users, rather than technology. New chapters concentrate on the five planes of user experience found in Jesse James Garrett's book The Elements of User Experience (CH, Sep'11, 49-0321). Coauthors Lynch, a senior digital officer in Yale University's Office of Public Affairs and Communications, and Horton, a user experience strategy lead for the Paciello Group, address interface, content, and visual communications design for diverse users, with emphasis on mobile access, social media, and especially accessibility as it relates to all aspects of design. A key component of the design process involves research by consulting with users at each step of the development process, utilizing brainstorming, ideation, analytics, and usability testing. Both large and small web projects will find the chapter on "Process" helpful in implementing and keeping the design process on track. Colorful illustrations enhance the text's message, along with recommended reading lists at the end of chapters. While a bit academic in tone, the chunking of information allows quick access, as does a comprehensive index. Summing Up: Recommended.
