This text advances a new paradigm to improve addiction treatment outcomes, the Family Recovery Treatment (FRT) model. A brief history is provided tracing the evolution of addictions treatment, culminating in a critical review of currently used models and their poor success rate. The FRT model represents a radical deviation from current treatment, tackling factors limiting success, for example: family who often enable continuation of addiction are excluded from the process; treatment is integrated, eliminating multiple independent providers, an approach which has often resulted in lack of continuity and coordination across recovery; and overall addressing the lack of fully integrated, comprehensive, and unified treatment. FRT diverges from current models in how, by whom, and to whom addiction treatment is delivered. Within FRT, a single provider, the licensed Family Recovery Therapist, serves as case and team manager, coordinating care for the entire family system across the continuum of recovery stages, services, and providers, from treatment initiation through one year of continuous recovery. Integration of care is promoted by soliciting input to the treatment plan and goals from everyone concerned. FRT provides 14 foundational principles to guide treatment delivery and processes. Through case studies, the text describes FRT in practice, providing evidence-driven instructive guidance for implementing an effective recovery management system and team. Summing Up: Recommended.
