In Key Sociological Thinkers Stones (Western Sydney Univ., Australia) presents essays on 24 popular thinkers in the field of sociology. This new edition comes out about ten years after the second (CH, Aug'08, 45-6541); the first edition was published in 1998. Several changes are evident: more US- or UK-connected philosophers have been added (such as Michael Mann, Zygmunt Bauman, Bruno Latour, and Jeffrey Alexander), and five essays have been removed from this edition (including those about Simone de Beauvoir, Sigmund Freud, and Herbert Blumer), although these and some other essays are freely available online on the publisher's companion website. The book also presents new "Seeing Things Differently" sections within chapters--a helpful feature for group discussion, which provides suggestions on how the theorist's ideas can be contextualized in everyday life. The work--appropriate for those newly exposed to the primary sociological thinkers in the field--would make great supplemental reading for an introductory sociology course. Libraries that own the earlier editions may want to purchase the new release to keep pace with changes in popularity of some theorists over the past decades.
