Choice Review

The wide-ranging entries in this single-volume encyclopedic work review selected highlights in Chinese American history and culture. The four parts focus on the context of Chinese Americans' immigration to the US, their political and economic activities, cultural and religious pursuits, and involvement in literature, the arts, popular culture, and sports. Sections begin with a brief introduction, and black-and-white photos appear throughout. The contributors' essays direct readers to a few sources for further reading, and a four-page bibliography provides additional resources. Ten abridged primary documents are also included. Given the brevity of the work, it would have been nice if some of the contributions had a narrower focus. A 32-page "Chronology of Chinese American History" takes a somewhat scattershot approach, listing seemingly tangential information about the wars in Korea and Vietnam or various facts about non-Chinese Asian immigrants. Some entries also discuss specific events in Chinese history without making clear their direct impact on Chinese Americans. Such minor quibbles aside, the work will be valued for its specific focus on Chinese Americans as opposed to Asian Americans in general. Editor Lee (San Francisco State Univ.) has written or coedited other recent works, including History of Asian Americans (CH, Aug'15, 52-6577), Asian American Identities and Practices (CH, Dec'14, 52-2060), and Encyclopedia of Asian American Folklore and Folklife (CH, Sep'11, 49-0029).
